Cooking Lake Blackfoot Recreational Area
This 97 sq. km day use recreation area offers more than 170 km of trails for hiking, mountain biking, canoeing, cross-country skiing, dogsledding, snowmobiling, snowshoeing and horseback riding. 24 km east of Sherwood Park on Hwy. 16 to Range Road 210, south of Elk Island National Park, 922-4676.

Elk Island National Park
Canada’s first federal wildlife sanctuary, established in 1906. Bison, elk, moose and deer roam together in this this national park boasting more than 250 species of birds. Wildlife viewing, hiking, picnicking or camping, are among the abundant recreational activities. Open year-round. Admission: $5 adult, $4.25 sen, $2.50 child, $12.50 group. Hawrelak Park
This sprawling riverside park is a perfect place to enjoy nature in the city, and plays host to many of the city's festivals. The small lake is home to ducks and Canada geese in the summer, and is a wonderful place to skate in the winter. The Heritage Ampitheatre provides an open air venue for live performances.

John Janzen Nature Centre
Discover the natural wonders of Edmonton with interactive displays, interpretive programs and self-guided tours. Permanent exhibits include a beehive, frogs, fish, snakes and salamanders. Self-guided birch-tree and river loop nature trails are highlights -- if you encounter unusual tracks or wildlife on your visit, the John Janzen experts will help you identify your find. Rundle Park Paddleboats
Located south of the family centre in Rundle Park, you can ride on a paddleboat and aqua-trike, in-line skate and play volleyball (rentals available); ice cream and firewood sales. Open 12-9 pm on June weekends and 12-9 pm every day in July and August, weather permitting.

Strathcona Science Provincial Park
The park offers 4.1 km (2.56 mi) of bike paths and 4.2 km (2.6 mi) of hiking trails. Other facilities include picnic tables and shelters, BBQ briquets, public phones and water supply. Recreational activities during the winter seasons consist of downhill skiing and tobogganing.
