A printmaking professor in the Department of Art and Design at the University of Alberta, Sean Caulfield has exhibited his prints, drawings, and artist’s books throughout Canada, the United States, Europe, and Japan. His work is known for exploring the impact of industry, technology, and genetic work on the environment, humanity, and ethics.

His pieces are usually dark and ominous while still having a sense of intricate delicacy to them. He creates his usually oversized prints by first carving the drawings into wood blocks or etching them on to copperplates.

His most recent commission was for an installation piece in Manning Hall at the Art Gallery of Alberta. The Flood is a large-scale mural made of woodblock panels hand carved by Caulfield. The imagery in the piece is meant to explore the impact of technological advancements on our environment — both in the past and the future, giving it both a cautionary and historic theme.

You will be able to view the work until August 2016 at the AGA. Visit his website to learn more about the artist.
