Canada is one year off of celebrating its sesquicentennial, and the excitement is beginning to ramp up with many fantastic events around Edmonton throughout the day! Start the day right with a delicious pancake breakfast, take in special celebrations at the city’s attractions, and finish with a brilliant fireworks display all on Canada’s birthday: July 1st!

2016 Canada Day Road Race | 7 am
Challenge yourself to a 15K Walk or Run, or do the fun 2.5K Run or Walk. The race is a fundraiser for the Canadian Cancer Society, with all funds staying in Alberta. After the race, be sure to hang around the grounds to partake in the free pancakes!

Canada Day Pancake Breakfast | 7 am – 10 am
Enjoy a FREE pancake breakfast in front of the beautiful Legislature building. Cash donations will be accepted for the Edmonton Food Bank.

Citizenship Ceremony | 10:30 am
Welcome new Canadians to the country by witnessing the citizenship ceremony! The event will be followed by the traditional 21-gun salute at noon, along with the singing of “O Canada!”

Canada Day at the Alberta Legislature | 10 am – 7 pm
Tons of family fun is programmed throughout the day! Local artists — including The Provincial Archive — will be performing on the Alberta Discovered stage on Capital Plaza starting at 12:40 pm. You can take a tour of the Legislature Building and see where your MLA sits — a special honour reserved only for visitors on July 1! Crafts and food trucks will also fill out the rest of the day.

Celebrate Canada Day at the Muttart! | 10 am – 2 pm
Enjoy live music, crafts, face painting, and more fun activities for the whole family at this specially programmed day!

Celebrate Canada Day at Your AGA | 11 am – 5 pm
Bring the whole family for FREE general admission at the Art Gallery of Alberta! On top of seeing their current exciting exhibits, you can take in art activities and appreciate the work done by Canada’s artists.

Canada Day at the Garden | 11 am – 3 pm
Celebrate Canada’s birthday in one of the most beautiful settings in the city: the Devonian Botanic Garden! The whole family will enjoy live music, crafts, games, and a yummy Canada Day cake! Canada Armed Forces Personnel and Veterans receives half-price admission with valid ID.

Birthday Celebration at the Zoo | 11 am – 4 pm
Not only is it Canada’s birthday, but Lucy the elephant and the Edmonton Valley Zoo have their birthday on July 1 too! Celebrate with a scavenger hunt, mini cupcakes, and live music at this large birthday bash!

Canada Day at TWOSE | 1 pm – 10:30 pm
Mark Canada’s birthday with some cool science at TELUS World of Science—Edmonton, which is also celebrating its 32nd anniversary! The fun kicks off with a science circus filled with messy experiments, followed by the launching of 32 rockets! Sample some maple liquid nitrogen ice cream, and then stick around for the laser shows with Justin Bieber and Pink Floyd music!

Canada Day Concert | 4 pm – 7pm
Attend a FREE concert at West Edmonton Mall’s Newcap Radio Stage featuring Canadian indie bands, including Hollerado, The Royal Foundry, and Cynthia Hamar. The concert will be followed by a meet & greet!

Canada Day Fireworks | 11 pm
Enjoy the magnificent fireworks display over Edmonton’s river valley parks and the North Saskatchewan River. The best viewing locations include the Alberta Legislature Grounds, Victoria Park, and Government House Park. For more information about road closures and viewing points, view the city’s website.
