Remembrance Day in Edmonton

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the First World War, making it a significant one to mark with a day of remembrance. Venues throughout Edmonton will be hosting services and concerts to honour veterans and those Canada lost in service. Here are some of the main venues where you can pay your respects:

Songs and Letters of WW1: 1914-2014 | Nov 8 | 7:30 pm
This concert features baritone Clint Hagel, actor Faye Stollery, and pianist Emily Grieve, as they share the stories of people who experienced WWI firsthand through a performance of classical artsong, poetry, and prose from the war. Work from well-known artists, such as Wilfred Owen and George Butterworth, will be presented alongside materials from the archives of the City of Edmonton and University of Alberta. The first show at Muttart Hall is ticketed, but the second show at Holy Trinity Anglican Church is admission by donation.

Royal Canadian Artillery Band Musical Salute | Nov 9 | 2 pm
Hear a concert in support of our veterans! Join the Royal Canadian Artillery Band as they perform A Musical Salute: A Tribute to our Veterans. Admission for the event is free.

Remembrance Day Service at City Hall | Nov 11 | 9:45 am – 11:30 am
City Hall will host a Remembrance Day service to honour the achievements and sacrifices of those who served our country in times of war and piece. Commanding Officer of the Loyal Edmonton Regiment will lead the service, and Mayor Don Iveson will be in attendance. Following the service, there will be an outdoor procession to the City Hall cenotaph, where wreaths will be laid. Please note: Seating begins at 9:45 am, and must be completed by 10:10 am so that the service can begin promptly at 10:15 am.

Alberta Aviation Museum Remember Day Service | Nov 11 | 10 am
Hosted by the Air Force veterans and the museum’s staff, this annual service will honour all of those who served in the air force and is open to all those who would like to attend.

Remembrance Day Service at West Edmonton Mall | Nov 11 | 10 am – 12 pm
Join the Jasper Place Branch #255 of the Royal Canadian Legion as they honour and remember Canada’s war veterans, peacekeepers, and those who lost their lives serving alongside them.

Remembrance Day Ceremony at the U of A Butterdome | Nov 11 | 10:10 am
This Remembrance Day Ceremony will be led by Alberta’s Lieutenant Governor Col. (Ret’d.) Donald S. Ethell as Albertans pay their respects to those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for Canada. Parking at the Butterdome will be free for those attending the service.
