halloween240Did you know that the University of Alberta is haunted?! According to staff at Rutherford House (the historic home of Alberta’s first premier Alexander Rutherford), there is a little boy — dressed in 1920s attire — who stands in the upstairs office bouncing a blue ball and then disappears! The Old Arts Building was the scene of a lovers’ quarrel in the early 1900s that led to a murder! Today, students regularly see shadowy figures fighting on the roof of the building. During WWII, Pembina Hall was used as a makeshift hospital for injured soldiers. A nurse was in love with one of the soldiers, and when he died she was so upset, she threw herself in the river. Her body was never found. To this day, a ghostly female nurse and a man wearing a uniform can be seen wandering the halls.

You can learn more about the haunted history of the city at Edmonton Ghost Tours, which run on certain weeknights until October in the Old Strathcona and University of Alberta areas. Visit the website for more information.

Or, if you’re looking for more ghost stories, check out this spooky book by a local author.
