Canada Day Celebrations

July 1
One of the largest celebrations of Canada's birthday west of the nation's capital takes place in Edmonton every year on July 1. Canada Day begins with a pancake breakfast, a road race, fun run and a citizenship court at the Alberta Legislature grounds. The Silly Summer Parade moves through the Old Strathcona Historical Area at noon, and there are special afternoon celebrations at most city attractions. In the evening, the multicultural extravaganza is followed by the Great Divide Waterfall (the High Level Bridge is turned into a living waterfall) and a spectacular fireworks display over the river valley.

Edmonton International Street Performers Festival

July 8 - 17, 2005
Downtown Edmonton smiles for 10 fun-filled days of "pass the hat" performances by sixty internationally known street acts including magicians, clowns, jugglers, mime artists, musicians and comics for the young-at-heart. More than one thousand free outdoor shows are scheduled.

Grand Prix of Edmonton

July 15 - 17, 2005
World-class championship racing featuring an international line-up of drivers, teams and sponsors from seven countries, participating in 14 events. The race will take place at Finning International Speedway at the City Centre Airport which will be transformed into a 1.9 mile temporary road circuit. Open-wheeled race cars will speed past the grandstands at over 200 mph. The configuration of the track is unique to Edmonton, allowing at least 80 per cent of the track to be seen from the grandstands, so spectators are able to see more of the race for longer periods of time.

ITU International Triathlon Union World Cup

July 23, 2005
An international collection of athletes compete annually in the Edmonton ITU Triathlon, all aiming towards the coveted World Cup. The day includes the Canadian Age Group Championships.

2005 World Masters Games

July 22 - 31, 2005
The largest multi-sport event in the world, featuring 27 different sports. Masters athletes are usually at least thirty years old, and there is no upper age limit. The games have seen competitors into their nineties.

A Taste of Edmonton

July 21 - 30, 2005
Ten days of delectable food sampling presented by over forty of Edmonton's finest restaurants. Sample old favourites, such as green onion cakes and chocolate covered strawberries, as well as thirty per cent new menu items. Your taste buds can travel from a Tapas bar in Spain, to a Sushi bar on the Ginza. And while you¹re enjoying "a taste of Edmonton", you'll also experience lively entertainment provided on two stages for twelve hours each day.

Edmonton's Klondike Days

July 21 - 30, 2005
Edmonton's early days as a frontier community and gateway to the Yukon in the 1890s rush for gold sets the stage for the city¹s Klondike Days Exposition and Festival. Enjoy a parade, pancake breakfasts, a gambling casino, gold-panning, free entertainment, the Sunday in the City, a Taste of Edmonton, King of the Klondike, the Klondike Chuckwagon Derby, and much more.

Historic Edmonton Week

July 24 - 31, 2005
History comes alive in Edmonton with celebration of all things historical. The Edmonton and District Historical Society presents the Historic Edmonton Week Festival. Take in special events including horse drawn carriage tours, church and cemetery tours, walking tours of historical buildings and the river valley, historic food tasting, live music and old fashioned children's games, street car rides, high tea, garden tours, story telling and much much more.

Blueberry Bluegrass & Country Music Festival

July 29 - July 31, 2005
The Bluegrass & Country Music Society host a celebration of music in Stony Plain, just west of Edmonton, featuring a main stage show, jam sessions, lessons and demonstrations.

Edmonton Heritage Festival

July 30 - August 1, 2005
Come to Edmonton for a celebration of cultural diversity. Sixty cultures at fifty-plus outdoor pavilions feature non-stop international music and dancing, arts and crafts displays and demonstrations, traditional costumes, and samples of exotic cuisine in Edmonton's beautiful Hawrelak Park.

Edmonton Folk Music Festival

August 4 - 7, 2005
Considered one of the premier events of its kind in North America, the annual Edmonton Folk Music Festival is a four-day celebration of blues, Celtic, singer-songwriters, bluegrass, gospel and world music. Other highlights include family activities, arts and crafts, and a food fair. It¹s all outdoors in the natural acoustic amphitheatre of Gallagher Park in Edmonton¹s scenic North Saskatchewan River valley.

CariWest-Edmonton Caribbean Arts Festival

August 5 - 7, 2005
Celebrate the music, food and arts of the Caribbean. This popular event features a colourful costume extravaganza, calypso competition, a gala parade through the city centre, and a dance. A family-style block party is held on Saturday and Sunday at Churchill Square with Caribbean food, arts and crafts, a costume workshop for children and steel band music competition.

Edmonton's International Fringe Theatre Festival

August 18 - 28, 2005
Eleven days of uncensored, non-juried theatrical excitement held in the heart of Edmonton¹s Old Strathcona neighbourhood. The Edmonton Fringe Theatre Festival hosts over 1,200 performances of 140 productions on thirty stages, in the parks and on the streets, with 1,000 performing artists from Alberta and around the world. The festival is regarded as the largest alternative theatre festival in North America.

Edmonton Labatt Blues Festival

August 19 - 21, 2005
Blues International present three days of top local, national and international blues acts ­ acoustic and electric, from funk to zydeco ­ at the Heritage Amphitheatre in Hawrelak Park.

Edmonton Dragon Boat Festival

Dragon Boat racing on the North Saskatchewan River with 18 to 20 paddlers in each of six boats. The annual summer event celebrates the city's Chinese-Canadian community. Anyone is free to enter the races and put together a team, train and compete.
