There is no shortage of fun things to do this July 1, as Canada celebrates its 148th birthday! City Hall and the Alberta Legislature have always been hot spots on our nation’s birthday and this year is no exception, but here are five other exciting ways to spend your Canada Day before you settle in to your favourite fireworks viewing spot.
Edmonton Valley Zoo | 11 am – 4 pm
As you celebrate Canada’s birthday, join the Edmonton Valley Zoo in celebrating their 56th birthday and Lucy the elephant’s 40th birthday too! Grab some red and white mini-cupcakes and sing “Happy Birthday” to Lucy as she gets a special birthday surprise. Take part in a scavenger hunt, visit theadventure bus, and get an airbrush tattoo while you enjoy live music and all the furry critters.

Mill Woods Park | 1 pm – 11 pm
Head to Mill Woods Park for free family activities, including hay rides, a petting zoo, colouring stations, face-painting, carnival games, bouncy castles, and an inflatable obstacle course, all while enjoying live music. To top off the night, at 11 pm there will be a fireworks display!

Art Gallery of Alberta | 11 am – 5 pm
Use the Art Gallery of Alberta’s free Canada Day admission to visit exciting exhibitions and participate in hands-on art activities.

Enjoy live music, Canada Day crafts, and face painting, as well as treats and other fun activities that will be offered throughout the day.

Celebrate Canada Day with a journey back in time to Fort Edmonton. Watch an authentic parade, toast the Queen, watch a traditional dance, hear a Métis Poetess, and more!
