Just 20 minutes north of Edmonton, Bon Accord is a small, friendly community full of beautiful parks and gardens, talented artisans, and a deep appreciation for the little things in life, be it a delicious meal or a clear night sky. The town’s name derives from the motto for the Scottish town of Aberdeen, the former home of many of the town’s first citizens, and means “good agreement.” After visiting, you’ll agree that this charming town is the perfect place for a relaxing, rejuvenating day trip.

1) Go stargazing
Bon Accord is Canada’s first and (so far) only community to be officially designated as an IDA Dark Sky Preserve. This makes it the perfect place to get an unimpeded view of the night sky in all its glory. Visit one of Bon Accord’s many parks and bring your blankets, a telescope, and a sense of wonder for an unforgettable nighttime adventure.

2) Stroll Through the Heritage Rose Garden at Springbrook Park
Nestled in a quiet residential area, this park has lots of open space for playing Frisbee, as well as a playground for kids to enjoy. Enjoy a takeout lunch at the picnic tables set up during the summer, and then take a walk through the stunning Heritage Rose Garden, which features a variety of colourful blooms.

3) Connect with nature at Prairie Gardens
For farm-to-table at its best, Prairie Gardens is the place to be. Take in a gardening or chicken husbandry workshop, find unique heirloom produce and local goods at their farm stand, or enjoy a picnic lunch at one of several scenic spots around the farm. Prairie Gardens runs special events throughout the year, so there’s always something new to experience.

4) Browse handcrafted ceramics at Pottery by Heather
One of Bon Accord’s foremost artisans, Heather Edwards creates unique, nature-inspired pottery out of her studio on 50 Street. Book a studio tour ahead of time to go behind the scenes and see how these works of art are created, then pick up the perfect piece for your own home.

5) Get takeout from Chelsea’s Pub
This hidden gem is one of Bon Accord’s most beloved family restaurants, and for good reason. Visitors rave about the delicious meals and exceptional service that have become Chelsea’s trademark since their opening in 1998. Enjoy hearty favourites like burgers, pizza, donairs, and more, served up with small-town hospitality.
