Did you know that Edmonton has the best tasting drinking water in North America according to the American Water Works Association? Or that our water is treated for 12 hours before it reaches the tap?

Generally, we might take our water and its source for granted. But EPCOR’s Glass of the Sask is here to remind you that the North Saskatchewan River is a big part of what makes Edmonton special. With partner restaurants serving water in special edition carafes, this unique initiative helps educate Edmontonians about our iconic water source.

You can use these special edition carafes at participating local Edmonton restaurants!

“Without water, we wouldn’t have a restaurant,” says Cyrilles Koppert, owner of Urban Diner and Partake, two of the participating restaurants.  Koppert and GM Lorraine Ellis note that their partnership with EPCOR has been a wonderful opportunity to support local businesses post-pandemic while also encouraging patrons not to be scared of tap water. “Our water is great!” says Ellis. She isn’t wrong – despite numerous myths that the river is ‘dirty’ or ‘unclean’, water downstream from Edmonton has actually improved in quality over the past 60 years thanks to our treatment plants and improved regulation.

And local restaurants aren’t the only institutions urging Edmontonians to deepen their connection to the North Saskatchewan. This summer, we were lucky enough to attend an Eco Float hosted by EPCOR and the River Watch Institute of Alberta. This float provided the perfect hands-on experience to learn more about Alberta’s waterways. By pairing science and adventure, this river float was another wonderful way to honour our mighty water source.

As we move into fall, EPCOR reminds us that the best way to respect the river is to protect it. This isn’t a tough task! Simply pick up some litter or choose tap water over bottled whenever you get the chance.

So raise a glass, let’s celebrate the water and everything that it offers!
