From 1868-1872, Scottish photographer John Thomson captured some of the unfamiliar landscape and fascinating cultural moments of day-to-day life in China. He was a pioneer in photojournalism and his interest in the customs, occupations, and appearances of the Chinese people from all social levels resulted in a wealth of images that are now important historical documents. The exhibit China Through the Lens of John Thomson will showcase these photographs and will be complimented by The Mactaggart Art Collection: Beyond The Lens, a companion exhibit that will show articles of clothing and art from the imperial side of China.
