Much to Do for Nothing at the Edmonton Fringe

Though the real entertainment magic at the Fringe occurs inside one of its 54 theatre venues, there’s more to do at the Edmonton International Fringe Theatre Festival than seeing a show. And many of these things are free!

Fringetwo1. Outdoor Stage Performers
A human knot, an improvised hip-hop concert, a waterbomb war—those are only a few examples of the unique and entertaining shows that you can catch on the grounds. An outdoor stage is never empty for long, and most of the shows last for about 45 minutes, with performers joking with audience members, performing impressive tricks, and teasing their final big stunt. Though these shows are free to watch, the performers aren’t paid by ticket revenue, so they depend on the support of the audience’s donations.

2. Shopping
The paths of the Fringe are lined with cool pop-up shops and vendors, usually selling their handmade wares. Some great Edmonton vendors to check out include Bang Bang Bijoux’s jewellery made from recycled, vintage, and repurposed parts; Jason Blower’s whimsical illustrations; and Salgado Fenwick’s fashions, which have a hip and comfortable style.

3. Buskers
As you’re walking around the Fringe grounds, you may be surprised by some of the entertainment you encounter around every corner. That bronzed cowboy may appear to be nothing more than a statue, but toss a coin in his cup and watch him mosey! Or perhaps a pair of violinists or a folk artist will serenade you as you walk from venue to venue. If you want to feel particularly special, purchase a written-on-the-spot poem from the Poem Shop!

4. KidsFringe
The Fringe can be a completely different experience for children who have an almost endless list of fun activities at the KidsFringe: clowns, puppet shows, arts and crafts, magicians, and so much more! Located on the north end of the Fringe grounds on 104 St. between 85 and 86 Ave., the KidsFringe is chock full of free outdoor family fun. At the Kidstage, children will enjoy the interactive plays created and performed by the KidsFringe Youth Troupe, or at the Book Nook, they can relax and let their imagination do the running as they listen to a story.

5. Beer & Wine Tents
Feeling a little thirsty after a show with no air-conditioning? Stop by one of the beer and wine tents for a refreshing drink! The beer tents feature brews from Big Rock Brewery along with other drinks, and the wine tent is host to a variety of wines and live musicians. Chat with your neighbours to learn what they’re enjoying about the Fringe—one of them may even be the performer from that show you loved who’s willing to share more insights.
