A rising star in Canada’s fashion scene, local Derek Jagodzinsky’s (LUXX Ready To Wear) professional and effortlessly chic spring/summer 2014 collection was heavily influenced by his Cree background, specifically the four direction colours (black, white, red, and yellow) on a traditional medicine wheel. Due to their cultural significance, two of his outfits from this collection will soon be on permanent display at the Royal Alberta Museum!

WHERE Edmonton Magazine sat down with Derek to get his expert opinion on spring fashion trends:

WHERE (W): What is your take on fashion trends for women this spring? Derek (D): I see four main trends emerging this spring. The first is a culture clash, which is a well-travelled look that is a mix of ethnic inspirations including a nod to the orient as well as to Native American style. Next I see a blur between art and fashion — designers have taken new art, murals, and famous works and transposed them onto their fabrics. 3D prints, using bold and textural applications, were all over the runway, as well as fringe used in more polished silhouettes.

W: For men? D: Modern classics seem to be the staple this season, with a less is more attitude. Graphic t-shirts in modern prints are also on trend.

W: What is one piece you recommend that women buy this season? D: A beautiful bomber jacket — one with embellishment that you can put on over anything and look fabulous. This is a piece that can be worn over multiple seasons.

W: And for men? D: The same piece actually — a bomber jacket in a bold print is the perfect statement coat to take you into the warmer months.

W: Where do you like to shop for clothing? Simons  is one of my favourite spots. They have a great mix of high, medium, and low price points and cater to a lot of different ages and styles.

LUXX is having a sample sale on April 25 from 2 pm – 7 pm. All of the spring/summer collection will be on sale in sizes 2-16! Suite 215, 10113-104 St., 780-707-3400.
