Evolution is both inevitable and essential, particularly in the arts. For almost 30 years, the Guys in Disguise production company has been creating and exhibiting shows that have comedically pushed many boundaries. However, their 2016 playbill includes something a little different.

Darrin Hagen and Trevor Schmidt are the creators of Klondykes, a musical about two women who must disguise themselves as husband and wife in order to join the Klondike Gold Rush. The men originally intended to perform the piece themselves, but soon discovered that they could delve into deeper issues with a female cast.

“Our work, it’s not just about men in dresses. It’s not just about being gay,” says Hagen. “If it were [us] in the roles, it would have been more spoofy… [but this] allowed us to go a lot more into two really fascinating women, and to actually do a real piece of history.” Schmidt adds, “This is about real women… [and] it’s a lot about identity, about figuring out who you are, how you relate to others. I think [it] particularly questions, ‘How can I be happy?’”

The pair figured out their own paths at the Edmonton International Fringe Festival, which occurs every August and allows both new and veteran artists alike to showcase their work. It is not only a place to take your first steps, but also a place to learn and grow.

“When you see someone else’s good work… you get inspired to do better,” says Schmidt. “Professional jealousy is essential.”

Hagen agrees. “You always want to be better. Otherwise, you’ll stay the same… As you get older, if you choose to stay in the arts, there’s a certain responsibility that comes from that.”
