Nothing screams “Edmonton” more than green onion cakes! Find Hong Kong Bakery at Taste of Edmonton 2022 for a taste of the city’s history.
Edmontonians have long lobbied to have green onion cakes declared the city’s official food. They were even the subject of a 2018 historical study, when Edmonton’s then historian laureate Chris Chang-Yen Phillips set out to determine the dish’s roots once and for all.
Thanks to Chang-Yen Phillips, the green onion cake’s Edmonton origins have been traced back to 1978, when restaurant owner Siu To started serving them at Happy Garden and Mongolian Food Experience. The savoury scallion-filled pancakes were a huge success and quickly spread across the city through events like Folk Fest, the Fringe, and Taste of Edmonton. To this day, no festival experience is complete without a fresh green onion cake in hand.
Luckily, Hong Kong Bakery at Taste of Edmonton 2022 has you covered!
