  2. 1. Margherita Pizza was initially thought to be named after Queen Margherita of Savoy in 1889. Also allegedly, the pizza’s toppings of basil, tomato sauce, and mozzarella were meant to signify the colours of the recently unified Italian flag—green, red, and white. However, historians also argue that the pizza existed long before 1889. In this case, the key to the pizza’s name may have been right in front of us all along! ‘Margherita’ translates to ‘daisy,’ and the thin slices of mozzarella were often arranged in a floral shape.
  3. 2. It’s been to space! In 2001, Pizza Hut arranged to have one of their pizzas delivered to the International Space Station.
  4. 3. In 2017, Neapolitan-style pizza making obtained UNESCO recognition. Joining couscous and the art of miniature on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, true Italian pizza making is now formally protected! So don’t worry, margherita pizza will never go out of style.

Is all this pizza talk making you hungry? La Diavola Pizzeria at Taste of Edmonton 2022 has you covered! Head down to booth 19 for a slice of their signature Diavola pizza! They might not have a True Neapolitan Pizza trademark, but it will taste delicious regardless!
