Originally slated for the 2020 season, The Garneau Block is the first in-person performance put on by Citadel Theatre in over a year. After months of waiting, this comedy-drama, based on the novel by Edmontonian author Todd Babiak, now invites you into a neighbourhood perhaps not too different from your own.

Starring Shelly Antony, Julien Arnold, Rachel Bowron, Nadien Chu, Sheldon Elter, Alana Hawley Purvis, Andrew Kushnir, George Szilagyi, and Stephanie Wolfe (as well as Scooby and Koko),The Garneau Block tells the story of a neighbourhood attempting to come to terms with an unspeakable tragedy. A house in their midst now stands empty, like a terrible question. How will they answer it? From a seemingly-well-to-do couple secretly wracked with guilt to a newcomer trying in vain to help his neighbours start fresh, this lively group of characters are all struggling to understand themselves, each other, and how best to move forward.

Powered by an electric cast, stunningly atmospheric set, and plenty of laughs and tears, The Garneau Block is the perfect start to Citadel’s 2021 season. It’s a testament to the ability for everyday people, as well as the arts themselves, to struggle, grow, and overcome the worst of tribulations.

The Garneau Block runs until October 10. Proof of full vaccination or a recent negative COVID test are required to attend. Citadel Theatre’s complete COVID protocols are available here.
