The first weekend in March is full of arts and eats! From book fairs and exhibits to digital concerts and outdoor dining, there’s something for everyone. Check out what’s going on in Edmonton.

1) We Lit Afro Indie Book Fair | March 6
Alberta’s only Afro-Indie book fair showcases a variety of Black authors and their works, with guest appearances by Desmond Cole, Dr. Charmaine Nelson, and Sunn M’Cheaux. This year’s event is streaming live on Facebook and Zoom. Register online for free to enjoy author readings, Q&A sessions, writing tips, and more.

2) SkirtsAfire Festival | March 4-14
This annual Edmonton festival features the work of women in the arts, and this year’s lineup includes both online and outdoor options. Stroll through Old Strathcona to view displays for the Skirt Design Competition—there are six of them and you can vote on your favourite—and check out the online performance of Body of Words, a collaboration between SkirtsAfire and Ballet Edmonton.

3) Eats on 118 Ave | til March 31
For the month of March, you can enjoy dine-in special and take-out specials at various spots along Alberta Avenue (118 Ave.). 4) Uncovered—Notes from the Heart | March 6
This digital concert features iconic songs (from greats like Bob Dylan, Carole King, Bob Marley, Jann Arden, and more) reimagined and performed by today’s leading Canadian artists.

5) Threads That Connect exhibit | through Mar 20
This new exhibition through the Alberta Council for the Ukrainian Arts highlights the legacy of Ukrainian embroidery and weaving, and how it connected generations of Ukrainian culture. Pieces on display include costumes from previous Shumka productions, curated personal clothing, and various working looms. This is a free exhibit that allows walk-ins, though the gallery is limited to 6 people at a time as per COVID-19 regulations.

6) Date Night Under the Stars | Thu–Sun throughout March
Visit the University of Alberta Botanic Garden for this winter date night activity. Slip down an ice slide, enjoy live music, warm up by a fire pit, stargaze, and more. You can also sign up for additional activities like guided Moonlight Snowshoeing, Indigenous Dark Skies Storytelling, and/or Northern Light Tapas with delicious gourmet savouries and sweets.
