Happy May long weekend Edmonton! From antique sales to a festival dedicated to felines, there’s tons of local events to enjoy! Here’s what’s on this weekend.

Melafrique | May 19

This Afro-fusion band has been making waves on the Edmonton music scene since 2016. Meaning “Melanin From Africa,” Melafrique uses music to celebrate their identities as African and Caribbean people and musicians. They will be bringing their signature flair to the Starlite Room for a night of good music and good vibes!

AGA Comic and Zine Market | May 20–21

Support local makers, learn about Edmonton’s vibrant local art scene, and find your new favourite zine all in one spot: The Art Gallery of Alberta’s Comic and Zine Market is back! Celebrating independent publications and printers, this event will feature zines, comics, books, and wearable accessories.

Edmonton International Cat Festival | May 20–28

A festival dedicated to our feline companions? Sign us up! This event brings together cat lovers with a series of special events, with 100% of the proceeds going to local cat rescues. Enjoy Cat yoga at Yogalife Studio or bring your adventure cat to Paul Kane Park for a meet-up. Festival activities continue for the rest of the week, so make sure to check out their website for a full schedule.

Fort Edmonton Park Opening Weekend | May 20

One of Canada’s largest living history museums is officially open for the 2023 season! Step into the past at this iconic Edmonton attraction by interacting with costumed historical interpreters as they walk you through the diverse and engaging stories of Edmonton’s past. Plus, with carnival games, a 1920s-style ferris wheel, and lots of historical buildings to explore, the opportunities are endless!

Driving Thru The ’70s | opens May 20

Dust off your bell bottoms and get ready to boogie! This new exhibition from the Reynolds–Alberta Museum is celebrating the cars, music, movies, and vibe of this influential decade. On top of highlighting the cars of this time period, Driving Thru the 70’s will include several special activities, including a 70s themed game show and a section of the exhibition dedicated to the Boogie Van in popular culture. Sounds exciting, right? Head down to Wetaskiwin and join them for opening weekend!

Drag Brunch at Campio Brewing | May 21

Looking for a fun way to enjoy the warm weather? Campio has got you covered! Head down to this brewery to enjoy performances from local drag queens, including Twiggy, Kio Karr, Bambi Dextrous, and more. Plus, weather permitting, this event will be hosted on Campio’s beautiful patio! Enjoy iconic performances, delicious food, and the wonderful weather.

Old Strathcona Antique Mall Parking Lot Sale | May 22

The beloved parking lot sales are back for the 2023 season! Head down to the Old Strathcona Antique Mall to browse vintage wares and antique treasures from tons of local vendors. Plus, there will be delicious Jamaican food available for purchase, supplied by The Jamaica Association of Northern Alberta. Note: parking at the Antique Mall will be limited, but overflow spots will be available at the NAIT South Campus parking lot (10321 University Ave).

Celebration of Dance 2023 | May 22

One of Alberta’s largest Ukrainian dance showcases is taking the stage this weekend! Hosted at the Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village, this stunning event will feature several dance groups of all ages from across the province, as they gather together to celebrate the art of Ukrainian dance. While you are there, make sure to pay a visit to the historical village, which officially opens for the season on May 20. Visitors can explore historical buildings, engage with costumed interpreters and enjoy delicious Ukrainian Food. Sounds like a perfect way to spend the long weekend!
