National Day for Truth & Reconciliation | September 30
Friday is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, an opportunity to honour and remember the victims of Canada’s residential school system. As stated by the Government of Canada, “public commemoration of the tragic and painful history and ongoing impacts of residential schools is a vital component of the reconciliation process.” This national commemoration embodies Call to Action 80, as outlined by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada. SNAP Gallery – New exhibitions | opening October 1
Two exciting new exhibitions are opening at the Society of Northern Alberta Print-artists gallery this weekend. Nehiyaw Isko ᓀᐦᐃᔭᐤ, created by Cheyenne Rain LeGrande ᑭᒥᐊᐧᐣ of the Bigstone Cree Nation, grapples with the artist’s identity as an Indigenous femme through two performance pieces. Cheyenne Rain LeGrande’s work often speaks to both the past and the present, and she explore history, knowledge and traditional practices.
Just add oil; I feel cold is an exhibition by Kev Liang which engages with experiences of generational trauma, diaspora, and queerness. Using polyethylene blue tarps as his material, Liang reflects on his past, creating communities, and resisting capitalism.
Join SNAP for an opening reception on October 1, with a performance by Cheyenne Rain LeGrande at 7:30 pm.
