Matt Bahen: On the Wind & Andrew Rucklidge: Edge of the Wild Country
April 24 - May 29
It is with great pleasure Peter Robertson Gallery announces the launch of their latest exhibitions.
Toronto-based painter Matt Bahen strives to interpret the power of metaphor and allegory with paint. Bahen listens to audiobooks while working and is an avid reader of fiction, particularly Cormac McCarthy, TS Eliot, and Joseph Campbell. His impastoed surfaces and stark compositions are at once unsettling and highly engaging. Using various motifs including water, fire, and animals, Bahen constructs individual narratives that remain in a state of perpetual tension.
Working out of Toronto, Andrew Rucklidge started making handmade oil, distemper, egg tempera, encaustic and watercolour paint about twenty five years ago. Rucklidge became a student of Max Doerners’ The Materials of the Artist and quickly learned that many underpainting techniques could provide innovative creative options while also leading his work away from industrial readymade paint and into more uncharted heterogeneous mixtures. With this approach, Rucklidge creates landscapes that seem halfway into a dreamscape, inviting the viewer into a world of fantastical colours and forms.
