Much of Kyle Beal’s work in Spectator Sports was created during the COVID-19 shutdown, and although it is not in direct response, his creations reveal a person’s unconscious search for celebrity. The rise of social media and some people’s addiction to it has cast many as their own brand ambassadors. Beal’s creations play upon humans’ quirks. His distinct brand of humour elicits unease and self-reflection.
Audience enticement and language are important to this Edmonton-based multidisciplinary artist. The exhibition features an array of works, meticulously drawn messages obscured by mirrors, a soapbox that viewers can only imagine themselves standing on, a large-scale suspended sculpture, and much more.
Optical illusions, surprise and humour create an accessible platform for ‘spectators’ to re-examine their day-to-day routines and behaviour.
